FOUND PET STORIES

January 31st, 2008

We just recovered our wonderful little gray cat who had been missing nearly a week. Samson managed to sneak out and his disappearance went unnoticed for about a day, until we realized that he hadn’t been out to eat or loitering around our feet in the kitchen. We immediately reported him to the local pound as well as to other lost pet groups and posted missing cat flyers throughout our neighborhood and the surrounding areas. We conducted through searches of the neighborhood, calling for him and trying to entice him with the sound of treat bags, but found no trace of our Samson. We left him some food near all entrances to the house and carefully monitored the feeding dishes to see if anything was being eaten. We immediately noticed that something had been eating the cat food; whether or not it was Samson was still unknown. Within a few days I’d gotten an animal trap from the local SPCA and baited it with tuna. Sadly, he was either uninterested in the tuna or afraid of the trap, because despite my attempts at disguising it with towels, it remained open and the food in it was untouched after several days. Finally, after nearly a week of no confirmed sightings, I saw and heard our little guy one night as I went to check on the cat food dish; I’d called for him and he responded very vocally, meowing several times before being scared across the street and into the sewer by a passing car. Inspired by the sighting, my fiancé and I set up camp in the garage in front of the cat dish and sat quietly in the dark, watching the cat dish and waiting for Samson to come around again. After about an hour and a half, Samson cautiously poked his little head into the garage. Though he was terribly frightened, he answered our calls with meows and inched his way toward my fiancé, who had quietly positioned herself near his food dish. As soon as he was within reach we made our move and managed to grab him, despite his best efforts at escaping. Samson had lost a lot of weight, managed to get his fur all matted and smelled awful- but he was home! After several hours of being incredibly timid and cautiously investigating our house, he began acting normally again. I’m happy to report that he’s almost entirely himself again- cuddly, friendly, trusting and vocal- just a day later.
